Jackie & David O'Reilly
When David and Jackie bought an old, run down orchard, their passion for eating and cooking fresh food took a serious turn. With the need for an income, they turned O’Reilly’s Orchard into a business and now grow and sell organic fruit and vegetables. “I think what we like most about what we do is the raw honesty,” Jackie says. “The kind of customers we have are all very honest people too”. With produce ranging from baby turnips and button squash to nectarines, melons and herbs, Jackie and David have their work cut out for them. “It’s a healthy environment and the tasks as varied due to the diversity of crops so we don’t stay on one job all day, which is good for us mentally and physically. When they occasionally get to go on a holiday, Jackie and David don’t have to go far. “We love hitting the road occasionally and it’s the nooks and crannies we like to explore; the Flinders Ranges are the most awesome, but we also love the Riverland and Coorong too,” Jackie says. Apart from selling their fresh produce, Jackie and David also welcome diners and treat them to dinner on the verandah. While they grow more than 30 different species of fruit and veg, the enterprising couple has their favourites. “David’s favourite are peaches and I think that’s close, but I do love the asparagus in spring,” Jackie admits.
