Saffire Freycinet, Pure Tasmania’s new high-end property on Tasmania’s East Coast, has introduced two new experiences to compliment the full-day Schouten Island Signature Experience.

Schouten Island’s vast and abundant eco-system played a part in early Aboriginal settlement, and farming, mining and fishing in the area. Now, it is part of the Freycinet National Park, a rarely explored, wild, unpredictable, delicate and unforgettable place both above and below the sea.

“What we have found is that our guests are very keen to enjoy Schouten Island, but some don’t have enough time with us to immerse themselves in the full-day Signature Experience,” Saffire General Manager Matt Casey said.

“So we have introduced a new half-day experience, which is still exclusive to Saffire guests, that takes in the island and its majestic surrounds.

“We have also introduced a 90-minute exploration of Great Oyster Bay that will be open not only to Saffire guests, but guests staying at our sister property Freycinet Lodge as well.”

The Schouten Island Express – 3½ hours
Join us on an amazing, fun-packed, interpretive journey along the coastline of Freycinet National Park to Schouten Island.

Cruise around the eastern side of the island before heading south to the impressive Taillefer Rocks – an incredible breeding ground for seals, shearwaters and petrels. Enjoy a delicious morning tea in the sheltered Hen and Chicken Bay and learn about life above and below the sea.

A special highlight is a glimpse into the underwater world using our submersible video camera – search rocky crevices for crayfish and abalone, and spot the abundant fish species among the kelp gardens.

Above the surface, sea eagles glide, albatross wheel on the wind and flocks of shearwaters sweep across the sky. Dolphins are commonly observed along this coastline; and every year, Southern Right Whales follow their timeless migration.

The Great Oyster Bay Blast – 90 minutes
Are you ready for high speed action and adventure in beautiful Great Oyster Bay? You will experience some exciting twists and turns, powered by the 1050hp, 11.9 metre Saffire, capable of speeds up to 85 km/h.

Learn about the dramatic landscapes, and the lives of individuals past and present who have made this home for over 10,000 years.

Departs Saffire Gallery 2:00pm Mon, Tues, Thurs and Sat – $110 per person (minimum four people).

Schouten Experience – full day from 9:00am to 4:00pm
Come on a full day of discovery as you explore southward along the Freycinet Peninsula. Admire the spectacular natural scenery before going ashore on beautiful Schouten Island. Discover the amazing history of mining and whaling and walk along the secluded beaches.

Along the way, chat to the guides about the geography, geology, history and wildlife of the island and the East Coast region.

Enjoy spending some up close and personal time with the local seals. Watch as we drop our remote operated camera below the surface, and bring you face to face with a new world of nature. An epicurean lunch is provided in an exclusive setting on Moreys and Crocketts Bay.

You will be able to relax on the island before re-boarding Saffire for your return journey to the Saffire Sanctuary, where you will be able to reminisce about your day over a sensational glass of wine.
