Jules Lund ‘Gets Away’

Monday, 17 October 2011

The ‘Getaway’ presenter and co-host of ‘Fifi and Jules’ on Australia’s Austereo Network take some time out to chat to e-Travel Blackboard about his favourite destinations to visit.

e-Travel Blackboard: As a presenter on Getaway, you have travelled extensively...which destination holds the closest place in your heart (apart from Australia of course!)

Jules: I've been lucky enough to visit South America with Intrepid Travel a couple of times. The last trip was magical.

We headed to Arequipa, in the south of Peru, and experienced a home stay with a local family. Not wanting to turn up empty handed, I stopped the bus at the town square, and bought a Llama off a lady. It was a huge hit!

The family was very generous and they even sacrificed their prized guinea pig for dinner!

Needless to say, the adventure felt like it had been ripped straight from the pages of a National Geographic.

e-Travel Blackboard: Thinking of that destination, what is your favourite thing to do when travelling there?

Jules: The wilderness in Peru is EPIC in every sense of the word. As an innately lazy bloke, I'm often surprised at how compelled I am to hike. And one of the great experiences on our planet is visiting the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu.

Do yourself a favour and start saving up now. Definitely one to tick off the list.

e-Travel Blackboard: What has been the most recent overseas destination that you’ve visited that you'd recommend readers experience?

Jules: In June, my wife and I took our beautiful daughter - Billie - over to Hawaii - a place we'd never experienced before. It was everything we'd expected and more.

e-Travel Blackboard: What was your favourite island to visit?

Jules: We actually loved Oahu the most. As soon as we landed we hired a car and headed to the North Shore, where we spend a lazy week reading books in hammocks, pigging out on Mexican food and introducing Billie to the beach.

Such a great climate, it's almost impossible not to slow down.

e-Travel Blackboard: What is your favourite restaurant to dine at?

Jules: I've gotta say, the best meal I've had this year, was without question at ‘21 Degrees North’. It's a restaurant located at Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore, and I'm still talking about it months later. And the hotel itself was set in perfect paradise. It made our holiday.

e-Travel Blackboard: What is your favourite place of interest to visit?

Jules: It's funny, after a week of relaxing, we were keen for a bit more action! And contrary to what I had previously heard about Waikiki being overly 'touristy' we absolutely loved it.

I look forward to the day when all our friends have kids and we can all head over there for group holidays.

It's got a great mix of beautiful beaches, outstanding restaurants, bars for the boys and shopping for the girls (plenty of stuff for the kids too - I s'pose they deserve some consideration!)
