Travellers flying in and from Hong Kong International Airport may find themselves in the midst of total chaos if airport staff vote in favour of strikes over pay disputes. Airport staff representative of up to 31 international airlines flying in and out of Hong Kong, Jardine Aviation Services Limited Employees Union has threatened management that its members would be asked to decide on strike action if talks organised for today fail, The Standard reported. The management failed to show sincerity in the past three rounds of talks," the unions executive committee member Fu Ka-lok explained. Representing up to one third of the 1,000 workers, the union said they are seeking a pay increase to cover the long hours staff are expected to cover. According to the Group, some of its members have complained of being rostered on for seven days without a break and one worker was even recorded for being asked to work for up to 21 day successively. The union said it is aiming for a 20 percent rise in basic salary as well as a 50 percent increase in overtime pay. While Jardine Aviation Services management team has yet to respond to the unions requests, a meeting with up to 50 union members yesterday found that up to 98 percent of attendees were in favour of taking industrial action. The Group represents up to 31 airlines ground support in Hong Kong including AeroLogic, Air China, Air India, AirAsia, KLM, Air Macau, Air Mauritius, Air New Zealand, All Nippon Airways, Asiana Airlines, Atlas Air, British Airways, China Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern, Emirates, Garuda Indonesia, Jetstar, Kingfisher, Korean Air, Lufthansa, Qantas, Singapore Airlines and Shanghai Airlines. |
