Flight Centre sued over harassment accusations
Travel industry mainstay Flight Centre faces charges of denying former assistant store manager, Richard Barnes, his rights under the Fair Work Act.
Industrial relations advocate Josh Bornstein is the solicitor pursuing the action against Flight Centre, claiming workplace mistreatment and punishment.
Mr Barnes, rated as the top Australian agent before his resignation, alleged he was bullied at the company’s Frankston Student Flights store after complaining about the “relentless” ill-treatment of a colleague by store manager Kelly Gallasch.
Ms Gallasch is alleged to have consistently berated a female co-worker of Mr Barnes’, using terms such as “useless”, she “stinks” and suggesting she deserved to wear a “boob apron” at a work event due to lacking job performance.
After making an internal complaint Mr Barnes claims Ms Gallasch turned her attention to him in a manner which “intensified over a period of approximately six months.”
Mr Barnes said Flight Centre's human resources director, Gavin Miller and its national leader, Jared Baker, who has since left the company, were informed about his bullying allegations.
According to the legal claim, Ms Gallasch boasted to be “doing little things I know would be annoying him… [like having the] heater pumped… laughing out loud, singing Bon Jovi.”
Mr Bornstein believes this case only goes to show the depths and countless methods of workplace discrimination.
“The only limit to workplace bullying is one’s imagination,” he said.
Mr Barnes was prompted to resign and sue the company, after being shifted from his store and allegedly accused of acting inappropriately.
A spokesperson for Flight Centre said the company “takes allegations of this nature seriously and took action against several people in this instance.”
“Policies are in place internally and there is also a whistleblowers' hotline for those who want to speak to someone independently,” the spokesperson said.
Mr Bornstein is asking the federal government to introduce new laws that address bullying concerns before victims are forced to leave work and take legal action.
