  Capturing the flamingos in Atacama

SOUTH American eco-adventure operator explora is introducing a series of photographic expeditions from its properties in Chile’s Atacama Desert and Patagonia region.

The first departure of the five day programs will be in January. There will be a monthly departure from each property and they will be timed so it will be possible to link the five day adventures from the Hotel Salto Chico in Patagonia with those from Hotel de Larache in the Atacama.

The experiences will be operated in conjunction with Nikon Inc. and participants will be led on their journeys by the renowned New York photographer Katsuyoshi Tanaka, a specialist in Latin American photography.

The programs are designed for eight people and can include non-photographer companions who can participate in a wide range of explora activities at both lodges.

Explora chief executive, Jesus Parrilla said, that on each day of the program travelers will go on treks specially designed for photographic appeal accompanied by Mr Tanaka and an explora guide who will share their vast knowledge of the local history, flora, fauna and geography of the places visited.

He added, “It is recommended that participants bring their own DSLR camera, tripod and personal computer as each night they will meet with Mr Tanaka in a critique session focused on what was learned and photographed that day. In addition, explora will make available in the hotels a selection of Nikon D7000 digital SLR cameras with NIKKOR lenses (AF-S DX 18-200mm 1/3 5-5 6G ED VR II) and Nikon compact cameras which can be borrowed by expedition attendees.”

Atacama, the driest desert in the world, is one of the most inspiring locations for photography because of the sharp contrast between light, shade and colours: burning red desert at sunset, the verdant green of the oases and the crystalline white of the salt lakes laid out between the Andes Mountains.

Patagonia, the southernmost tip of the world, is the ideal place for photography with its unimaginable landscape and dramatic changes of colour and light as you venture into mountains, glaciers and crystal clear lakes trying to capture the spirit of this wonderful place and its people: the gauchos.

Cost of the photographic expeditions including all accommodation, meals, beverages, daily activities and transfers to the lodges will range from $3640 per person twin share for a four night program.
