The former voice of LRB, Glenn Shorrock, had 116 Australian fans heading down memory lane on a recent cruise of the Yangtze River, aboard Victoria Cruises’ luxury vessel, Jenna. Booked through leading China specialist Helen Wong’s Tours to perform a mini concert for a large group of Sydney radio 2UE listeners, Glenn showed he hadn’t lost his touch when he opened with his band’s largest worldwide hit, Reminiscing. One hit he wrotefor LRB – Cool Change – followed. And, yes there was an encore at the end of the show. “It was a great finale to a day spent exploring the spectacular Three Gorges,” said the UK born singer-songwriter who was the inaugural lead singer of the Little River Band. “I, however, never thought I would be singing to a group of Australians on a cruise of the Yangtze. I must do something similar again, perhaps in a different location.” Passengers paid from $5300 per person twin share from Australia for the Helen Wong’s Tours 12-day Cruise the Yangtze tour which also had as special guests leading Sydney weekend radio identities, George Moore and Paul B Kidd, and included visits on Beijing, Chongqing and Shanghai. For an artist who fronted a group with seven top 10 hits in the USA in the 1970s, Glenn seemed to choose well to share some of his former band’s hits with travelling companions, not on the Mississippi, but China’s Yangtze, the world’s third longest river. Not only did he enjoy seeing for the first the breathtaking features of the famous Three Gorges – Qutang, Wu and Xiling. He had ample time to mingle with the fans on a cruise which stretched over three nights. Built in 2009 with a capacity to cater for 378 passengers, Victoria Jenna is the newest member of an ever-expanding American-owned Victoria Cruises fleet which includes such vessels as Katarina, Anna, Grace, Sophia, Lianna and Selina. Gourmet dining which includes both western and Chinese cuisine is a feature along with general nightly entertainment, fashion shows, Tai Chi classes and lectures ranging from discussions on Chinese medicines to chats on the region and Chinese history and culture. There are also side excursions to such fascinating centres as Fengdu as well as mini cruises along the Daning River (to see the Lesser Gorges) and the Shennong Stream. Another highlight is the tour of the massive 2335-metre long and 185-metre high Three Gorges Dam which, when completed saw a dramatic rise in the water depth and ultimate flooding of 13 cities, 140 towns, 1352 villages, hectares upon hectares of farmland and the relocation of just under two million habitants. So successful was the recent tour that Helen Wong’s Tours plans to arrange further celebrity tours in 2013. |
