Auckland to host key powerboat industry conference

Monday, 26 November 2012

Auckland Convention Bureau (ACB) has helped secure another significant conference for Auckland that will bring in more than 200 leading players in the global powerboat industry.

The conference will be held in October 2013 and is set to inject more than $800,000 into the Auckland economy.

The bid for Auckland to host the 86th UIM (Union Internationale Motonautique) General Assembly was led by the New Zealand Powerboat Federation and was secured with the assistance of ACB and Tourism New Zealand’s Conference Assistance Programme.

ACB Manager Anna Hayward says that attracting international conferences to Auckland not only contributes financially to the tourism industry but also drives strategic business opportunities.

“Auckland’s marine industry is internationally recognised for its skilled professionals and innovation. With 200 of the leading global players in the powerboat sector here for the conference, there is huge opportunity to not only share knowledge, but for potential investment and business ventures.

“It was a fantastic opportunity to support the bid for the conference knowing that the resulting business collaboration will help to drive economic growth in what is a key sector for Auckland.”

President of the New Zealand Powerboat Federation Denise Moughan is thrilled that the delegates are heading to Auckland.

“These are some of the foremost figures in the powerboat industry and they hold a great deal of influence on the world stage. We are held in high regard by the UIM members and the international connections and business and investment opportunities are very exciting.”

The conference bid was presented to delegates in Corfu, Greece in October, with Auckland beating out competition from Sweden.

Auckland Convention Bureau markets Auckland as a destination for meetings, incentives, conventions and events.
