Drag Queens and candy floss: Mixed reaction to new Air NZ uniforms

Wednesday, 13 January 2010

Air New Zealand has come under fire for its new 'candyfloss pink' uniforms, which one flight attendant said makes them look like 'drag queens'.

Designed by Trelise Cooper, the pink-coloured "concept" uniforms will be officially introduced in 2011, to coincide with the launch of a new aircraft fleet - the 777-300 aircraft.

Air NZ spokesman, Ed Sims has described the new uniform for female flight attendants as "contemporary," however many argue that the uniform of the male flight attendants and the ground staff looked comparatively much more "professional."

An unnamed flight attendant told the Dominion Post that the candyfloss pink color scheme will give them a "drag queen"-like look.

The attendant said that the uniform closely resembled the one used on the carrier's annual themed flight to the Sydney Mardi Gras festival, and that spilt food and drinks would be conspicuous on the pink color.

However, Sims reiterated that the new uniform, to be worn by over 5000 staff-members, was based on New Zealand themes.

According to Sims the new uniform works "in harmony with" the soon-to-be-unveiled new aircraft interiors.

Jack Yan, publisher of fashion magazine Lucire has also questioned the airline's colour choice.

"I've some doubts on whether pink conveys any national values."
