Tiger Airways causes chaos at Mackay

Tuesday, 29 September 2009

Hundreds of travellers were left stranded Monday morning after Tiger Airways cancelled two of its Mackay-Melbourne flights due to technical problems.

The cancellation of flights TT582 and TT583 left many travellers at Mackay Airport frustrated and angry as they were only told of the cancellation upon check-in.

“We were told the earliest we could get a flight was next Monday” a passenger told the Daily Mercury.

“I was really quite upset... It could cost us another $800 each to get home. You think you're getting cheap flights but you just get stuck”

A Tiger Airways spokesperson said the airline had offered to re-book passengers for free onto extra flights between Melbourne and Mackay.

“Tiger Airways has offered affected passengers a range of options including free-of-charge transfer to the next available Tiger flight; free-of-charge rebooking on another Tiger Airways flight on a route of their choice or a full refund or credit option to fly another time.

The spokesperson added that its flight coordinators tried to keep cancellations to a minimum, but excused Tiger Airways, saying all airlines cancelled flights from time to time.

The carrier has since scheduled an extra flight between Mackay and Melbourne to depart today.
