Base, one of the largest owners and operators of lodge and resort style backpacker accommodation in Australia has acquired another high end backpacker’s hostel, Tin Billy Travellers located near the Transit centre on George St in the Brisbane CBD. The accommodation is now called “Base Brisbane Uptown”. 

Base currently has over 1,650 beds across six complexes situated in downtown Sydney, two in the Brisbane CBD, St Kilda –Melbourne, Airlie Beach and on the beach front on Magnetic Island famous for the Full Moon parties. Each complex provides travel and employment agencies, internet cafes and has major bars and entertainment which are amongst the busiest in the towns in which they are present. 

Campbell Shepherd, CEO said “The purchase of Base Brisbane Uptown is a continuation of the  roll out of their successful single branded format across Australia and New Zealand to cater for the continued growth in backpacker arrivals in the region.

Campbell Shepherd said “he was delighted with this result as it meant that the existing management team in Brisbane would continue to run the business and be able to capitalize on the significant expansion opportunities available to Base”. He also commented that “we have inherited a great team at Tin Billy Travellers with a real stake in the business. Campbell also commented that “one of the strategic reasons for Base to acquire Tin Billy Travellers was to capitalize on the location next to the transit centre and also on the large number of quality en-suite twins and doubles in the property that would sell well in to both the international travelling and domestic markets” 

Located around the venue are an increasing number of people in new office towers and residential apartment complexes recently completed which “will be targeted by the bar operation for breakfast, day trade and early evening trade with a new smart product offer with a craft beer focus” said Mr Shepherd.
