Virgin minus Blue equals business

Monday, 28 February 2011

In a bid to attract more business travellers Virgin Blue will ditch the Blue from its name over the next few months.

The announcement for the change comes just a week after the airline showcased its new designer class and economy class product as well as its new staff uniforms, The Australian reported.

According to the source, Virgin Blue creative director Hans Hulsbosch said that while Virgin would remain a part of the carrier, Blue was no longer necessary for the brand.

"There is a name change and that will be exciting," Mr Hulsbosch said.

"And I think from a pure business-class point of view, it will be a success."

The airline’s chief executive John Borghetti said the airline’s research found that Virgin’s name was too fragmented and so the carrier chose to drop the Blue so “that we don’t confuse the market”.

Mr Hulsbosch added that the airline chose to unveil the new brand in stages starting with uniform, seats and then the name.

"It's been a 10- to 12-month project and that was always going to start from the staff," Mr Hulsbosch said.

"It is crew that makes or breaks a good flight," he said.
