Aussies oi, oi, oi for Australia Day getaways

Wednesday, 25 January 2012

Although most workers are expected to return to work on Friday, it seems as though some Australians are planning an Australia Day getaway with bookings for the period increasing 232 percent compared to the same public holiday last year.

According to figures released by lastminute.com.au, travel to Queensland picked up the highest for Australians with a 642 percent increase while the ACT will welcome 412 percent more travellers.

Tasmania also picked up as a popular destination to spend the national day with 403 percent more bookings to the region as 361 percent more holidaymakers head to Victoria.

Based on the increase, a lastminute.com.au spokesperson explained that there was “no doubt that Aussies love public holidays”.

“It’s fantastic to see domestic tourism going strong,” a lastminute.com.au spokesperson said.

“While we have a reputation for being hard workers, we also love to chill out, and people are obviously setting out to make the most of the occasion by getting away for perhaps one last break this summer.”

New South Wales is also expected to welcome more visitors this Thursday with 242 percent more bookings while Western Australia, the ACT and Northern Territory will see 197 percent, 418 percent and 88 percent more long-weekenders.
