“Pinterest” – New Social Media?

Tuesday, 3 July 2012

“Seeing” new places is what travel is all about for many and what piques interest in a new place more than a photo? The relationship between Pinterest and travel makes perfect sense.

But what exactly is Pinterest? Is it just a social network for photo sharing or is it more than that for the travel agent? It helps users express themselves by creating collections, or ‘boards’ of pictures that reflect their individuality. It is a great place for peaople to connect and share common interests, such as the amazing places they’ve been or would like to go.

But does Pinterest have the legs, or will it just be “another” small time location in the massive world of social media.

Our perception, given its visual nature, is that Pinterest is here to stay.  Check some stats;

  • Pinterest has 11 million unique visitors per month
  • 1.3 million hits daily
  • Over 70% are female, aged 25-44
  • many of them earning over $100,000 a year
  • Around 50% of the users have children.

 These numbers mean a lot to travel agents, especially because those who use it to guide traffic get 5% of their hits through Pinterest alone.

Travel agents can use Pinterest to create pinboards that illustrate the tours or specific services they offer. What’s more is that Pinterest helps in finding amazing content for all the other social networks you might be on. It’s also a great research location to see what people are talking about.

Pinterest is the latest and definitely one of the most important social media marketing tools travel agents can exploit today.
