US rates summer surge

Thursday, 27 September 2012

Hotel rates across the United States boomed during summer, averaging a 17 percent increase.

Based on average hotel prices throughout June, July and August, the majority of popular US destinations saw healthy rate increases in summer 2012 compared to summer 2011, according to HotelsCombined’s year-over-year price index.

“Overall, the upturn data coming out of the US was quite impressive,” HotelsCombined vice president business development Yury Glikin said.

“It’s evident that the tourism sector there is experiencing significant growth and development compared to other international destinations.”

Taking top spot was Anaheim, registering an average nightly room rate increase of 43 percent; rising from US$109 in 2011 to $155.25 in 2012.

Savannah, Toledo and Indianapolis experienced a summer rate decline.

Despite fears of drug cartel violence, neighbouring nation Mexico witnessed a boost in summer rates.

Cozumel posted the greatest rate increase for summer 2012, rising 23 percent year-over-year.

Lahore in Pakistan recorded the most significant summer rate, swelling 169 percent, compared to 2011.

While the Middle East asserted healthy rate increases, some cities in Italy, Greece and Russia were in decline.
