Qantas has received a US$100,000 from the US Department of Transport (DOT) for allegedly failing to disclose additional baggage fees to consumers. According to a new ruling, carriers and ticketing agents are required to “clearly and prominently” advise travellers on the first booking screen that additional fees for baggage may apply, as well as show consumers where they can view the baggage fees. However, for a period of time after the ruling came into effect (24 January 2012), Qantas’ website failed to provide the appropriate information. “Airline passengers deserve to have complete and accurate information about how much their flight will cost, including baggage fees, when they first search for flights,” US Transport Secretary Ray La Hood said. “DOT will continue to take enforcement action against carriers and ticket agents when they fail to comply with our aviation consumer rules.” The Australian flag carrier’s newest commercial partner, Emirates also faced consumer protection groups this week on its way to a AU$10 million penalty for engaging in price-fixing. |
