World Travel Awards 2012

PromPerú is calling on Australians to vote for Peru in this year’s World Travel Awards as the closing date draws near. Peru has been nominated three times in this year’s awards under ‘World's Leading Culinary Destination’, ‘World's Leading Green Destination’ and ‘World's Leading Tourist Board: PromPerú’, in what the Wall Street Journal is hailing as the ‘Oscars of tourism’.

Over the last few years, Peru has become more popular than ever for Australian travellers, with the destination experiencing an increase of 23 per cent in Aussie visitor numbers in the first semester of 2012, compared to 2011. The World Travel Awards provides Peru’s growing Australian fan base the chance to vote for their favourite destination, and contribute to raising its profile as a leading tourism destination via this global industry event.

The World Travel Awards, with nineteen years of history, serves to recognise and celebrate excellence in all sectors of the tourism industry across the globe. The awards cover a wide range of mainstream and niche categories and nominees are selected by votes given from tourism industry professionals.

“We are very excited that we have achieved a triple nomination in this year’s World Travel Awards. We have worked hard to promote Peru as a diverse and unique travel destination and delighted that the destination is now receiving the recognition it deserves”, says PromPerú’s Director of Communications for Australia, Lorena Salhuana.

Salhuana continues, “Peru offers Australian visitors a diverse range of experiences, including a wide variety of gastronomic delights as a result of its intersection of indigenous, Spanish, European and Asian culinary traditions. Travellers to Peru can now experience its array of flavours and cultures through culinary day tours, multi-day foodie safaris, and our many cooking schools, which are becoming increasingly popular to complement the already well-known archaeological and cultural journeys on offer.”

“We are particularly proud of being nominated as a leading green destination as this award demonstrates globally the great care we take to safeguard our country, and our efforts to manage the external impacts on Peru’s economic, social and environmental development.”

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR) invites Australians to vote Peru in the nominated fields. Voting ends this Sunday 25 November 2012 and winners will be announced on 12 December 2012 in New Delhi, India.
