If travel agents are not considering the “triple bottom line” way of assessing business success they are missing significant opportunities.
In 1994, John Elkington suggested the triple bottom line defined business success as a measure of ecological, social and traditional financial aspects.
Airlines and car rental companies have gotten on board , offering “green options” (at a cost) to their customers.
But it’s the “social” sphere that presents an opportunity for travel agents.
Locally it's about having an environment that treats employees well ; happy employees work harder and miss fewer workdays.
Outside of the office, it's the global community that gives travel agents the opportunity to shine. Businesses that actively support and contribute to a community are generally held in high regard by their customers, in turn improving the financial bottom line.
Leanne Levett, Travel Studio in Tasmania says “ We do it because we love it … It's personally rewarding . It shows our clients we are socially responsible, the events we run are great for networking and support a great cause.
Jen Watson, Travelscene Monbulk, suggests “Volunteer travel supports the fundamental values of our business. Our clients are excited to know that there are ways that they can “give back” whilst they travel and our staff love being involved in something that has an element of altruism.
My mum, Lynn, is currently on a trip through Travelscene Monbulk and skyped me this morning saying “Outside of raising you boys….volunteering in Cambodia is the most rewarding experience that I have had. To get up everyday and go to work with no expectation of reward ….being part of a force that is making a difference to the lives of others… is unbelievably satisfying.”
WebSource Pacific is involved in supporting education initiatives in underprivileged areas across India. Visiting the schools and seeing the difference we made , even though it’s a drop in the ocean, is very satisfying.
Personally, I love keeping fit. I've raised thousands in events like “Run for the kids” and “The Foxtel Lap. At the end of March in 2012 I will be competing in Tough Mudder which raises funds for Amnesty. It's a good fit for a great cause.
Get involved.
