Spain’s largest airline, Iberia revealed its restructuring plan, prompting staff to declare a pre-Christmas strike. Union representatives for the staff of Iberia announced the strike in response to the restructure’s proposal to reduce the carrier’s current workforce by 25 percent, slashing 4500 jobs. The strike will impinge on airline operations on 14, 7, 18, 19, 20 and 21 December 2012. Union representative Francisco Rodriguez said the strike will affect “all activities of the company.” The revolt has been labelled costly and “absolutely untimely and irresponsible” by Iberia managing director Rafael Sanchez-Lozano. The Spanish airline suffered losses of €262 million between January and September 2012. Iberia’s restructuring plan also includes fleet and capacity reductions. |
