Joining the likes of other non-traditional hotel brands Versace, ANA and Japan Airlines, Scandinavian furniture giant IKEA is planning to launch its own hotel chain. But unlike the properties of its contemporaries, IKEA’s hotels will be - somewhat predictably - budget offerings, with properties earmarked for 100 locations across Europe. The first two ‘IKEA’ hotels are expected to open in Germany in 2014, with properties in Belgium, the Netherlands, the Nordic countries, Britain and Poland to follow. Inter Ikea, who owns the intellectual rights of IKEA, will operate the properties in conjunction with a soon-to-be-announced hotel chain, Associated Press reported. Harald Muller, a business development manager at Inter Ikea, whose property division is behind the move, told AP that aside from IKEA’s philosophy of “good quality at a reasonable price”, “guests won’t recognize IKEA in it at all” as the chain would not use the company’s name or furniture. However, according to Mr Muller, the hotels will have a Scandinavian “feel”, thanks to the work of its Nordic designers. Known for its ready-to-assemble furnishings, IKEA, the world’s largest furniture retailer, drew 655 million customers to its 287 stores in 2011. |
