Air Canada to the rescue!

On Tuesday 16 October, AC033 was on its way to Sydney when, around 250 miles away, its crew was asked by Australian Air Traffic Control if they could help locate a yacht which sent out a distress call.

The crew borrowed binoculars from customers and asked those with window seats on the right hand side of the aircraft to assist.  A reflection from a mirror was spotted.  The crew had found the yacht. It had been dis-masted and the person was standing up.  This was confirmed by a number of passengers who had been keen to assist.   The Boeing 777 flew over the yacht to signal to the occupant they had been spotted, advised Air Traffic Control of the yacht’s position, then proceeded to Sydney, arriving approximately 90 minutes after scheduled arrival.

It is believed the solo yachtsman left Pittwater, Sydney two weeks ago heading for Eden in New South Wales, but had been drifting away from land since last week.  Merchant vessel ANL Benalla arrived alongside the yacht late yesterday afternoon to provide shelter from strong winds until New South Wales water police vessel Nemesis from Sydney arrived to assist the yachtsman at midnight today.

Leggy?
If you’re fortunate to have been blessed with long legs, you can now opt for preferred seating with Air Canada and secure a seat in the bulkhead and exits rows for just CAD120 (A$118).  Do the maths and you’ll find it works out at just $8.50 per hour of flying between here and Vancouver!

You do need to be able to fulfil safety requirements and the seating is available on a first come, first served basis and other terms and conditions, so talk to your travel agent and make sure you get in early.
