Australians go loco for Europe rail travel

Thursday, 1 November 2012

The number of Aussies choosing to travel Europe by train is set to increase with cheaper fares

Australia is once again dominating as Rail Europe’s top country for ticket sales for the third year running, contributing 25 percent to Rail Europe’s global sales in the year to 30 June.

Overall, Rail Europe recorded a 23 percent increase in passenger numbers, resulting in a 21 percent increase in sales and for the first half of 2012 year-on-year.

The current promotion of discounts of up to 60 percent being applied on selected train travel across Europe this coming season is set to further boost these figures, which are expected to exceed €200 million (AUD247.2 million) by the end of the year.

Rail Europe’s manager Australasia Richard Leonard said the aim of the promotion is to further encourage agents to promote train travel among their clients travelling to Europe this season.

“These significantly discounted offers will no doubt keep travellers going to Europe in the coming months very happy with the affordability and also the sheer ease and convenience of travelling by train,” Mr Leonard said.

Agents are advised to check sale dates and validity of travel with their preferred GSAs - Rail Plus, Rail Tickets, CIT Holidays and Infinity Rail in Australia, and Rail Plus and Go Holidays in New Zealand.

According to Rail Europe, popular European routes include the Eurostar, within France and also Italy, while the rise in river cruising has boosted the Paris-Amsterdam route.
