US airline fares must display fees and taxes

Monday, 30 January 2012

The price of US airline tickets will increase this week to include taxes and fees that the federal government feel should be transparent and part of the advertised cost of the fare.

In the interest of consumer protection the Department of Transportation has ruled that US airlines, travel agencies, and online travel sites must include mandatory taxes and fees in published airfares, Tulsa World reported.

According to the Department of Transport, airlines in the U.S. must also advise passengers of baggage fees at the time of purchasing their ticket.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said passengers have rights and they should be able to receive fair and reasonable treatment when booking a trip and when they fly.

"The new passenger protections taking effect this week are a continuation of our effort to help air travelers receive the respect they deserve."

Travel Leaders/SpearsTravel Executive Officer Greg Spears said passengers will notice a single-digit rise in fares on travel booked under the new government regulations

"It will vary depending on what time you go and what fare you're flying on," Spears said. "When you book, it will add from $3 to $25 each way for passenger facility charges, airport fees and government fees, in addition to fuel surcharges."

Government officials said the new regulations will make it clear for customers to ascertain the total price they will have to pay for air transportation before they travel.
