A dramatic increase in the size of its police force has seen the Republic of Haiti grow to be one of the safest destinations in the Americas. According to the UNODC, in 2012 Haiti’s violent death rate of 6.9 out of every hundred thousand was among the lowest rates in the Americas, and also the same as Long Beach, California. The destination also recorded the lowest rate of violent deaths in 2012 compared to previous year, as well as a two third drop from six to two American citizens murdered during their visit. Kidnappings of US citizens also fell in 2012 from 11 during the prior year to nine. The decrease in violence was mainly attributed to the destination’s focus on strengthening security, particularly the 50 percent increase in the size of its National Police. Haitian National Police (HNP) was also equipped with innovative technology and equipment to help track criminals. Last year, the Republic of Haiti announced that as part of its post-2010 earthquake rebuild it would also focus on building more tourism infrastructure. |
