In an effort to revive its unprofitable international operations, Australian carrier Qantas announced last week it is seeking a partnership with Emirates, a codeshare agreement which may be reached within six months, according to the UAE airline. Emirates has been engaging with Qantas for some time in an aim to see Qantas fly through Dubai, according to Bloomberg. The partnership would see both airlines benefit with access to each others network of flights, essentially widening the range of one-stop services on offer on Australia-Europe routes. Currently Qantas only offers one-stop trips to five European cities, via Singapore or Hong Kong. Emirates chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum said the two sides are not discussing a revenue-sharing accord. The proposed partnership comes after Virgin Australia formed a similar partnership with part-owner Etihad Airways that lets it sell one-stop tickets to Europe via Abu Dhabi, Dubai’s neighboring emirate.
