The Australian flag carrier has announced that 16 of its Boeing 767 aircraft, used on domestic routes, will be fitted with all new interiors and individual in-flight entertainment consoles.

The upgrades conform to Qantas’ new re-investment strategy for its domestic fleet.

Qantas domestic chief Lyell Strambi expounded on the new product developments.

“We will refresh the fleet’s cabin interiors with a contemporary design that includes leather seat covers in business and a new look and feel in the economy cabin,” he said.

“Other enhancements include new carpet, lighting, curtains and dividers.”

Qantas’ new in-flight entertainment will be streamed directly to devices in every seat.

“Following the successful trial of our QStreaming service this year, we will partner with Panasonic to provide over 200 hours of on-demand in-flight entertainment content via iPads to every passenger in business and economy travelling on our B767 fleet,” Mr Strambi said.

The first of the refreshed B767 aircraft will enter service in October and further enhancements to Qantas’ ground operations and continued aircraft upgrades are expected in the coming years.

In related news, a Qantas captain and second officer scheduled to depart from Dallas international airport this week were relieved of duties and are currently under investigation following a disagreement regarding take-off calculations.

After Qantas replaced the pilots, the Brisbane-bound flight arrived in Australia 18 hours overdue.

Although an investigation into the incident concerning the pilots is underway, Qantas faulted the weather for the flight delay, according to Fairfax.

“Qantas flight QF8 from Dallas-Fort Worth to Brisbane on 14 August was delayed overnight as a result of severe thunderstorms in the Dallas area,” a Qantas spokesperson said.
