This season, Antarctica travellers can add a one-of-a-kind experience to their Hurtigruten Explorer voyage. Guests who opt for a night of camping on the Antarctic continent will discover how Roald Amundsen experienced the nights under the stars during his Antarctic expedition. The nocturnal adventurers are accompanied by an experienced local expedition team.

Expedition voyages to Antarctica are among the last explorer adventures of our time. Mighty icebergs passing by silently, the powerful fluke of a whale breaking through the waves or the chatter of tens of thousands of penguins that can be heard even from the water, are sure to awaken the pioneer spirit in anyone.

Adventurous guests on the Hurtigruten expedition ship MS Fram can also indulge in their spirit of discovery on an extraordinary shore excursion in the upcoming 2012/2013 Antarctic season. In small groups, guests are taken ashore to an Antarctic camp where they spend the night, equipped with outdoor equipment specially tailored to the region, including warm winter sleeping bags and expedition tents. “The idea is to offer our guests an authentic experience in the spirit of the great explorer, Amundsen”, explains Mona Ringstrand, explorer product manager at Hurtigruten ASA.

The excursion was developed in collaboration with the Norwegian Polar Institute in order to guarantee the safety of visitors and the protection of the sensitive local environment. The required equipment is provided on board the MS Fram. All guests will receive a full briefing before going ashore for the night. The exact location and date of the camping adventure are determined by the local expedition team – depending on the weather and land conditions. For every 15 overnight guests, two members of the MS Fram expedition team will be on site. After spending the night on the white continent, the guests head back on board for a leisurely breakfast. The excursion can be booked exclusively on board and costs 2,950 NOK per person.
