Qantas jobs on the line

Tuesday, 1 May 2012

The Australian flag carrier has confirmed it will axe up to 400 maintenance workers from one of its three Victorian and Brisbane bases.

With the decision expected to be made this month, the airline’s spokesperson told media it would come from either Avalon, Tullamarine or its Brisbane base, Nine News reported.

"The significant reduction of maintenance required on our aircraft means we do not need three separate maintenance bases," the spokesperson said.

"We are continuing to assess various options and expect to make a decision by mid-May."

The confirmation comes less than a month after the airline’s review found that its Tullamarine base would need to close within months and up to 660 workers at Avalon would lose their roles with the company within two years.

Meanwhile the carrier’s Group also announced this week that its passenger numbers for March this year grew by seven percent compared to the same month last year.

Jetstar Asia saw the largest increase of 31.2 percent while Qantas domestic experienced minimal growth of 0.1 percent.

Jetstar domestic welcomed a 10.6 percent jump in passenger numbers for the month compared to the prior year as Qantas International also saw its traffic pick up 5.4 percent.
