Refitting, redressing and redesigning its crew look, Qantas has announced the appointment of Australian designer, Martin Grant to create the next instalment of the Qantas uniform.

Announced this morning, the airline Group’s chief executive Alan Joyce said Mr Grant was selected for his 30 years experience as well as his modern and contemporary designs.

Hoping to have all international, domestic and ground staff sporting the new look by 2014, Mr Grant said the next step in look and wear would see the designer talking with the airline’s uniform panel as well as collaborating with employees to discuss concepts and designs.

“As an Australian, I’m proud to be working with such an iconic Australian brand,” Mr Grant said. 

“It will be wonderful to see the Qantas teams wearing my design across Australia and in cities all over the world.

“I’ve already had the opportunity to engage with a number of employees across the business and I look forward to working with them again as we develop the uniform.”

The airline's head added that the uniforms stood as a "key image of how people view the company”.

“I think it’s important that when people see our ambassadors, our cabin crew, walking through the terminals, whether it’s in Santiago, whether it’s in Joh’burg, whether it’s New York... that they have that feeling that it’s uniquely Qantas,” Mr Joyce said.

The Qantas uniform has been re-designed nine times, with this being its tenth.

Crew working for the Australian flag carrier in 1948 strutted around in a military style uniform which took a navy winter suit spin in 1953.
