In what has been dubbed the war against the sandwich, Rome city council has outlawed snacking near the Eternal City’s historic centre. Those caught eating or drinking in zones which have “a particular historic or architectural value” will be slapped with fines ranging from €25 to €500, the UK’s Daily Telegraph reported. Residents of the historic centre hope to “re-educate people about how to behave in this city”, a resident association spokesperson told the paper. "At the moment people can do anything they like in this city," they said. Other campaigners reportedly want to further outlaw pub crawls popular with foreign tourists. |
