Egypt has officially reopened the Khafra Pyramid after three years of renovations on the second largest of the Giza Pyramids.

With six other ancient tombs unveiled to visitors late last week, Minister of Tourism Mohamed Ibrahim said changes to Khafra included improved electricity, ventilation and moisture systems, as well as general restoration, local media reported.

The reopening of the tomb coincides with the country’s recently launched tourism campaign, which looks to woo back travellers to the country by reminding them of its beaches, resorts and historical beauty.

According to figures released by Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, the civil unrest which occurred in Cairo last year resulted in a year-on-year 35.4 percent drop in arrivals for the second quarter of 2011.

Despite this decline, Egypt's tourism sector still accounts for roughly ten percent of the country’s GDP.
