Melbourne Transforms into a Tahitian Paradise

Friday, 19 October 2012

Travel agents in Melbourne will have the chance to experience Tahiti and her islands in their hometown when the Victorian capital hosts its first French Polynesian Festival next week.

Dozens of Tahitians will showcase the best of their islands during workshops ranging from Tahitian black pearl carving to monoi making and vanilla bean cuisine at the festival which will be held at South Yarra’s Como House and Gardens from October 25 to 28, 2012.

An opening night extravaganza will be held at Federation Square on Tuesday October 23 showcasing the best of Tahiti’s traditional singers and dancers including the winners of this year’s Heiva – Tahiti’s annual cultural festival.

Other events during the festival include a free film night at the Capitol Theatre on October 25, French Polynesian dining at select Melbourne restaurants, Polynesian dance and fashion shows at Functions on Chapel on October 26 and 27 plus a Tahitian dinner dance show at Leonda by the Yarra on October 30.

Tahiti Tourisme Australia Director Robert Thompson said it was a great opportunity for agents to get a taste of the destination without leaving home.

“More and more Australians are showing an interest in travelling to Tahiti and her islands this year so we hope to see lots of our travel industry friends in Melbourne attending the festival to sample a piece of paradise right on their doorstep,” Mr Thompson said.
