Bahamian Cays recover from Hurricane Sandy

Thursday, 1 November 2012

The Bahamian private islands run by cruise lines including; Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Holland America, Princess and Disney are recovering, once again, from the wrath of Mother Nature.

Remaining unvisited for the duration of the storm, the Bahamian Cays are expected to be back on itineraries this week.

Princess Cays

A statement from Princess Cruise lines reports that Princess Cays has experienced extensive beach erosion but has had its power renewed along with telecommunications and email.

“The end of the observation pier was also lost,” a Princess Cruises spokesperson said in a statement to e-Travel Blackboard.

“As soon as conditions permit we’ll begin clean up and we hope to have everything, except the observation deck, operational for the next call on November 11”

Great Stirrup Cay

Norwegian Cruise Lines’ private island sustained beach erosion and minor damage to structures and landscaping according to a statement to USA Today by the cruise line’s vice president public relations AnneMarie Mathews.

“We expect the island to reopen the middle of next week,” Ms Mathews said.

The Hurricane hit just months after the completion of a USD$30 million upgrade to the island.

Castaway Cay

Disney Dream returns to Castaway Cay today following the clean up of storm debris on the beaches and displaced sand.

Disney Fantasy was affected by Hurricane Sandy a little more than the line’s private island, with the ship experiencing rough conditions en route to Port Canaveral last Friday.

“Overall the ship is fine and is currently sailing a seven-night Western Caribbean cruise,” Disney Cruise Line manager public affairs Rebecca Peddie told e-Travel Blackboard.

“We had minor superficial damage involving some cracked windows that have been addressed.”

Half Moon Cay

Holland America’s private island, also frequented by Carnival Cruise Lines, sustained only minor damage with some beach erosion.

Carnival Cruise Lines senior cruise director John Heald also reported on his Facebook page that, according to his sources at Holland American Line, the horses are all safe and well.
