Travellers arriving at Avalon Airport may in the near future be able to board a driverless monorail linking a new train station to the airport terminal building. The state government is considering constructing a rail line to Avalon which will enable travellers to board a train from Melbourne direct to Avalon airport station, the Herald Sun reported. This new AUD200 million plan will allow passengers to check their luggage and obtain a boarding pass at the new Avalon airport station and then board a short five minute monorail ride to the terminal. The concept comes in the midst of requests to make Avalon the city’s second international airport after Tullamarine. Avalon Airport Chief Executive Officer Justin Giddings said there is going to be an increase in the number of commuters using Avalon which will represent a growth from around one million a year to over five million by 2016. Mr Giddings added that the proposed rail link would prevent travellers from missing their flights due to traffic congestion. “The airport experience would actually start at the Avalon train station,” Mr Giddings said. Mr Gidding said that the new rail link to Melbourne airport would cost travellers around AUD20.00 per journey which will offer a reasonably priced option into the city for the budget conscious. |
