Peggy Murphy, USTOA Vice President

Monday, 18 June 2012

USTOA President Terry Dale has praised her “dedication”, “tireless work” and “expertise”. Find out what Peggy Murphy’s travel essentials are, and what she likes most about her new job.

What drew you to work in the travel industry?
I was one of the youngest in a large family, and we often took road trips to visit my older siblings at their college campuses. It was always an adventure for me to see new cities, and I knew I wanted to see more.

What do you like most about your job?
I enjoy working with our members from all over the world and learning about their businesses and destinations. I also gain satisfaction from helping them come together to create wonderful tour packages for all types of travelers.

Who do you admire and see as a role model in the travel industry?
I had the opportunity to work closely with the late Bob Whitley, who was president of USTOA for over 30 years. He taught me the importance of fostering relationships between all members.

What destinations are on your travel bucket list?
I would love to take a cruise to Alaska and go on a safari in South Africa.

What’s a memorable travel experience you’ve had (good or bad)?
I was fortunate enough to be able to take 3 1/2 months in 1993 and drive around the United States. I had my Jeep tuned up and packed it with all kinds of necessities to explore the great USA, including skis, camping gear, hiking boots, etc. I started and ended in New York, and along the way touched all corners of the US, from Maine and Washington to southern California and Key West. I loved the trip because I met many different types of people and had the opportunity to see what a beautiful country we live in.

What are three things you must always take with you when you travel?

A camera is number one - I have three kinds that I take with me to make sure I get the best shot. Comfortable shoes are number two. The third item I always carry is the name of a person to contact in case of an emergency.

Name someone famous you’d like to travel with and where you’d like to take them.
I would love to take Phil Mickelson to Ireland and play a few rounds of golf with him!
