Aussies are not so hospitable, according to a new survey that found foreigners perceive Australians as being unreliable, untrustworthy and unhelpful.
Further still, respondents of the survey felt that holidays in Australia offered poor quality and bad value, the Herald Sun reported.
The fresh findings came from a global survey conducted by George Patterson Y&R ad agency Head Russel Howcroft.
Mr Howcroft explained that the positive part of these findings was that these perceptions could be changed.
Mr Howcroft said 80 percent of foreign markets perceived Australia as “different”, 60 percent had knowledge of it, half thought Australia was a relevant place to them, however only 30 percent held it in high esteem.
“If you don’t hold a brand in esteem, you’re highly unlikely to pay a premium for it,” Mr Howcroft said.
“Australia isn’t cheap, so they need to have a perception of very high quality, high value for what it costs them when they get here, to appear reasonable.”
The survey also reveals that the Chinese think we are stylish but not very helpful, Americans say we are carefree and rugged but don’t deliver quality or good service and the British see as charming and independent but not trustworthy.
Tourism Australia chief Andrew McEvoy said he wasn’t shocked by the recent findings.
Tourism Australia is trying to change perceptions across the globe with its $180 million campaign “there’s nothing like Australia”. “There’s different perceptions in different countries about Australia, so we’re encouraging people who have been to Australia to tell our story via Facebook and it’s working,” Mr Mc Evoy said.
