Flight Review: Virgin Australia DJ 559 Sydney to Perth

Wednesday, 1 August 2012

Carrier

Virgin Australia A330-200

Flight Number

DJ 559 departing 13:05 - 31 July 2012

Duration

Four hours and 15 minutes

Class

Economy, Seat 40A

Configuration

2-3-2 in economy class

Check In Experience

There were no lines to contend with at check in so I breezed straight through and was pleased not to get stopped at security for a random check so that I could make it to my gate in time.

On Time Service

The flight departed on time but was delayed for 30 minutes on the ground at Perth Airport due to a lack of gates being available.

Cabin/Seat Condition

The seats were in perfect condition and the plane seemed brand new.

Spacious enough for economy, I noted, for the first time, an alert light notifying passengers when electronic devices can be used...very smart!

One of the best things about flying with Virgin, apart from the ever fabulous service, is the safety video. It makes me laugh every time and is so much more enjoyable than the oft monotonous safety demonstrations by the flight attendants on other carriers.

Food & Beverage

I was excited to hear the announcement that Luke Mangan's chunky beef pie was available to purchase on this flight given that it was over three hours.

At $10, it’s not the cheapest meal on the menu nor the easiest to eat on a plane, but it was very enjoyable.

Tasty, fresh and truly 'chunky', the tangy tomato relish complimented it well.

Further into the flight I enjoyed a complimentary cup of tea and a 'Spotted Cow Cookies' cranberry and white chocolate cookie served by the very sweet Alissa who wouldn't let me pay for it! It was a first for me and really lovely of her to serve me even when they weren't coming through with trolley service.

Entertainment

I'm always pleased when I board a flight complete with screens on the seat backs and this flight was no exception.

Being the longest domestic flight I had taken, it was nice to be able to fit in two movies. My choices..."The Lucky One" and a favourite of mine, the classic "An Affair to Remember". Two brilliant movies and both ones that had me shedding a tear but trying to hide it from my fellow passengers!

Service

Service was excellent with the flight attendants attentive and personable. Their beaming smiles a sure sign I was flying with Virgin Australia.
