Almost 70 percent of Americans booking hotel rooms on mobile devices are seeking accommodation within a 24-hour period, according to results released in Expedia’s latest survey.

Online agency Expedia and Harris Interactive examined more than 2000 US traveller’s mobile device habits during their summer holidays.

More than 61 percent of those surveyed admitted to owning a smartphone, tablet or e-reader device.

Social media is paramount to US travellers, considering 86 percent of respondents took photos while vacationing and nearly 60 percent of those uploaded and shared their experiences online.

Nine of the ten most popular destinations for hotels booked via mobile devices are in America.

The afternoon, between 12pm and 6pm, was the most popular time for mobile bookers.

Friday and Saturday were the most popular days to book.

“Mobile devices have continued to become an essential part of travel, whether traveling for business or leisure,” Expedia.com vice president and general manager Joe Megibow said.

“With more travel options than anyone else, and now with exclusive deals just for mobile users, Expedia is making sure that no matter where you are, you can find the right deal for you.”
