Ireland has experienced a 5.7 percent increase in Australian visitors for the year, making it the strongest growing market in the country. The seventh largest market for Ireland, Australians have a strong connection to Ireland, with nearly 2.2 million claiming Irish ancestry. Tourism Ireland manager for Australia and New Zealand Diane Butler said the results were exciting in what has been a challenging year for Ireland. “We are confident that the Australian and New Zealand markets will continue the upwards trend into 2013 when we have some fabulous draw cards, such as the many events connected to The Gathering 2013 and seeing Derry-Londonderry crowned the inaugural UK City of Culture in 2013.” According to Ms Butler, Australian visitors to Ireland spend on average 12 nights travelling the country independently by car and staying in B&B accommodation. The manager encourages travellers to add Ireland to their European itinerary to experience a rewarding holiday, immersed in Irish culture, socialising with the locals and incredible landscapes. Tourism Ireland chief executive officer Niall Gibbons said the growth is in part due to the improved ease of access with Etihad and Emirates operating 17 flights to Ireland now with via the Middle East. |
