Glenyce Johnson, Peregrine Adventures MD

Monday, 15 October 2012

Having had the opportunity to cross 90 countries off her bucket list, Peregrine Adventures’ boss Glenyce Johson tells e-Travel Blackboard why she can’t travel without her earplugs and explains why she signed up to mentor with TIME.

e-Travel Blackboard: How long have you been in the travel industry?

Glenyce: I joined Peregrine in 1999 as the Financial Controller.  I had travelled extensively and lived overseas for eight years and was in the right place at the right time to combine my accounting background with my passion for travel!

e-Travel Blackboard: What drew you to work in the industry?

Glenyce: I had already travelled to about 90 countries when I joined Peregrine and some of that travel included a year over landing in both Africa and South America, so adventure and cultural travel was the perfect match.

e-Travel Blackboard: What do you like most about your job?

Glenyce: The rewarding part is being a part of people experiencing a trip of a lifetime.

e-Travel Blackboard: You’ve signed on to help train up-and comers in the TIME program, what inspired you to join and what do you find most rewarding about mentoring?

Glenyce: Judith O’Neil, one of the TIME program Directors approached me to see if I would be interested in joining TIME and I certainly find Judith to be inspiring and professional and I was very keen to be involved because I knew anything that Judith was involved with, would be rewarding and worthwhile.  I really enjoyed meeting and engaging with my mentee and the satisfaction of helping and sharing work and life experiences along the way was motivating, and learnt quite a bit myself in the process.

TIME offers fantastic learning opportunities to anyone in the industry looking to take that next step in their career. The positive feedback we get from mentees is a reflection of the program’s success.

e-Travel Blackboard: What quote/piece of advice do you live by?

Glenyce: I measure success by the number of loyal friends that I have, by the number of times that I laugh, and by doing a job that I love.

e-Travel Blackboard: Who do you admire and see as a role model in the travel industry?

Glenyce: Virgin...the success story of Richard Branson and the commitment to the success and culture of Virgin I find inspirational.

e-Travel Blackboard: What do you want to see improve in the industry?

Glenyce: A continued responsibility and accountability for responsible and sustainable travel.

e-Travel Blackboard: What destinations are on your travel bucket list?

Glenyce: I am doing the 790km Camino de Santiago walk in Spain late next year, which I am so excited about.  I also want to do the trans Mongolian and revisit places like Italy, Burma, Norway and New York.  And I cannot wait to visit Oman at the end of this year.

e-Travel Blackboard: What are three things you must always take with you when you travel?

Glenyce: Walking shoes for exploring, ear plugs so I can sleep anywhere and now my iphone so I can take photos and download images to tempt others to join me!

e-Travel Blackboard: If you were on a cancelled flight and the only option to get from A to B was by land, what mode of transport would you use and name three people you’d take with you?

Glenyce: If I had the time I would cycle and take my partner of 22 years and my two amazing god sons aged 17 and 15.
