Macau’s tourism director says the country “needs” to develop a new tourism strategy in order to attract extra arrivals and increase overnight stays.

Travelling to Sydney with a delegation of up to 32 tourism leaders, Macau Government Tourist Office director Joao Manuel Costa Antunes said the country was taking inspiration from successful tourism destinations including Australia to develop a five-year tourism Master Plan.

Meeting with the Tourism Minister of NSW George Souris, Destination NSW, Representative to trade commission and the Lord Mayor of Sydney this week, the director said the delegation hoped to learn and share tourism ideas with other cities and countries.

“We need to update the Master Plan for Macau as soon as possible,” the director explained at a press conference in Sydney.

“Everyone knows Australia is quite good for tourism.”

The tourism head said the delegation had also picked up a few tips from China, Singapore and Las Vegas.

As part of the delegation’s tour down under this week, the director said the group would also host tourism trade and this year’s Macau Tourism Roadshow, which will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art on 18 October this year.
