Australia is currently in the throes of a domestic tourism recovery following an annual increase in overnight trips across the country. Representing growth of 6 percent for the year ending June 2012, domestic visitor nights have been steadily increasing since mid-2011, according to a report by Invest in Australia. Every state and territory posted annual rises in domestic overnight trips. According to the latest Tourism Forecasting Committee (TFC) report, the key to sustaining long term growth in the domestic market will be finding a balance between the intricacy and unpredictability of Australia’s key tourism markets over the next ten years. Domestic tourism has been hailed as a major contributor to Australia’s tourism industry and overall economy. “Australians travelling at home is the bread and butter of the tourism sector in this country and international visitation is always the ‘icing on the cake’ - a robust domestic tourism market is essential to ensure the viability of our tourism offering,” Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) managing director Felicia Mariani said. Ms Mariani added that without a profitable and prosperous domestic market, Australian tourism businesses may become unsustainable. |
