The hotel has a rich history, being located in the former State Bank of Victoria building (built in 1923). The original Batman’s Hotel site was facing Spencer Street and was used as a boarding house for young country women who had moved to Melbourne for work.

This building was purchased in the 1980’s after a fire, and the new owners built the hotel from scratch. In 1990, the owners purchased a building on Collins Street, and then purchased the former State Bank of Victoria site on the (corner of Collins and Spencer Streets) in 1992 and worked to bring all three buildings into the one hotel site as it is today.  Elements of the building’s history have been retained (where possible) and the lift shaft is even the former State Bank of Victoria safe!
