Fire damages Delhi airport

Friday, 6 January 2012

Over 20 airline offices were damaged when a fire broke out at the cargo terminal at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) early Thursday morning.

Airlines offices affected by the blaze including Air India, Gulf Air, Thai Air and Aeroflot were gutted in the fire.  Airport officials said that there were no casualties or damage to the cargo that is stored in the warehouse that is part of the terminal.

The reason for the fire is yet unknown, however police believe sabotage could be the motive as they scan CCTV footage and have a forensic team examining the area from where the fire began.

The fire department was call after maintenance staff failed to douse the flames and took over three hours to control the blaze.
