Labour plans to spend $50million to boost Queensland's tourism

With China being a vital market for Queensland, the Labour government claims it will spend $50million to attract a larger number of its visitors, while increasing air connections to the State.

State Premier Anna Bligh said if the Labour government is re-elected later this month, it will strive to double visitor expenditure by 2020, the Herald Sun reported.

Ms Bligh plans to spend $50million over a three year period, the breakdown consists of $15 million being spent to strengthen the aviation industry and increase air connections to Queensland.

Tourism infrastructure will receive $20 million, while $5million will be invested into a plan to secure a large stake of China’s visitor market.

Ms Bligh said capturing the China market is vital for Queensland as recent statistic revealed Chinese tourists spent $400million in the Sunshine State in 2011 alone.

"For tourism in Queensland to continue to grow, we need to be going and working in new markets," Ms Bligh said.

"We know as China industrialises, as more and more people in China have disposable income to start to come out and see the world that they will be looking to see what there is to see in Australia.”

Ms Bligh added that the Labour government wants China to become the state’s premier market in Australia.
