Older travellers on the move

Enjoying Florence, Italy

Age UK, a charitable organisation designed to aid the elderly, has released new research citing travellers indulging vacations well into their 80’s.

One third of all travel insurance policies sold via Age UK Enterprises were purchased by customers aged 80 and above.

Europe, being the most accessible destination for UK visitors, is the most preferred point of travel for the 80+ age bracket, while one in ten opted for a worldwide policy.

Age UK Enterprises has seen a 20 per cent use in the sales of annual trip cover to those aged 50 and over, according to AOL Travel.

The new research also suggests aged travellers are burning the candle at both ends citing an increase in the number of elderly travellers taking more than one trip per year.

“We believe it's wrong that so many travel insurance providers impose a maximum age limit which excludes older people purely because of their age,” managing director of Age UK Enterprises, Gordon Morris said.

Spring and summertime are the most popular seasons for ageing holiday makers.
