Expanding the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) would not only benefit tourism but keep Melbourne competitive in the MICE market, according to Tourism Accommodation Australia (TAA).

Pitching for the Government to include a 12,500 square metre expansion plan of the MCEC as part of its forthcoming State Budget, the Group’s Victoria Branch president Peter Crinis said the additional space would boost local jobs, business and economy.

“Melbourne hotels are both a partner and major beneficiary in this business generated, and an expansion would have a major economic impact on the hotel sector, and act as catalyst for many additional jobs, new hotel developments and refurbishment of existing properties and help keep Melbourne’s competitive position in events and tourism infrastructure,” Mr Crinis explained.

TAA found that exhibitions, expos and business related events draws in up to $1.2 billion for the local economy and according to the company’s head, MCEC is “essential” to securing the majority of that business.

“It is now the right time for the State Government to commit to delivering this vital infrastructure project, which has been planned since 2004,” Mr Crinis added.
