Brisbane Airport chief executive and managing director Julieanne Alroe highlighted the importance of earning “social license to grow” from the local and state community, addressing delegates at the Aviation Outlook summit in Sydney.
Ms Alroe said Brisbane Airport has relied upon a simple, elemental formula when it comes to investing and growing business at Queensland’s major aviation hub.
“Plan well ahead, understand what you need to do, when you need to do it and remember that you are part of a community; people need to understand what it is you are doing and why.”
Brisbane Airport will open the final stage of its $250 million road and carpark network; which includes a multi-storied car garage, re-configured roads and ramps for traffic outside the busy domestic terminal.
“We’ve recently commissioned some research into our community to understand better how people feel about us and the results have shown that Queensland found us to be a well-maintained, safe and accessible airport, realising our importance to the economy of the state,” Ms Alroe said.
The research revealed 70 percent of respondents believed Brisbane Airport had a positive impact on the state economy, four out of five people said the airport is critical to tourism and three quarters insist Brisbane Airport is the front door to the state.
“Although positive, those figures don’t give us cause to think we can take anything for granted, rather they underline our responsibility to communicate with the community about what we are planning and why.”
Brisbane Airport holds regular community forums with people from neighbouring suburbs and those that live under flight paths.
“These forums give local residents a chance to meet one on one with our technical and expert staff to tell us about their experiences with Brisbane Airport, to ask us questions about operations and to get direct answers about future growth.”
These formal meetings are complemented by community activities organised at Brisbane Airport, encouraging the community to visit the airport and better understand the facilities available.
“The final piece in our engagement program is our Airport Experience Centre. It’s the first of its kind in Australia and one of very few in the world. It demonstrates the impact of aircraft operations and has received a lot of interest from the world aviation community.”
Ms Alroe said Brisbane Airport works hard to create innovative means to connect with the community.
“This includes our increasingly engaged social media programme. You can visit us on Facebook, Twitter and now on Pinterest.”
“The feedback we get from these conversation groups, forums and social network platforms help to identify gaps, trending issues and tackle future planning and development initiatives.”
