App of the Week: ScanBizCards

Monday, 6 August 2012

Find yourself collecting business cards but never really putting your new found contacts into use?

Well the solution has arrived in mobile format with ScanBizCards created to do exactly what its title suggests – scan a business card and add the contents to your mobile device.

Although launched in 2009 with the intent to ‘scan and save’, the App has transformed over the years from its basic beginnings to one that not only provides you easy contact storage but also provide you with visual cues to help remind its user to each contact.

The App has also developed to allow users to split contacts into separate folders, send social media invites, transfer card information from the phone to a browser and even export contacts to an Excel spreadsheet for database usage.

Cost

ScanBizCards Lite is free

ScanBizCards Premium comes at a charge from AU$4.02.

Available On

This app is available for iPhone/iOS, Android, Windows Phone and anywhere with WebSync Desktop access.

Why We Love It

Anything that can cut down on paper wastage while keeping contacts close for any emergency call is always a handy device to have around.

Lost In Translation

Getting the right light to scan business cards can often be tricky. To get it right be sure to keep your shadow off the card, place the card on a table for stability and make sure the entire card fills the viewport.

Other issues are often encountered when graphic designers choose to fill business cards with various colours and lay out text in a ‘unique’ format.

Those with an iPhone 3G will also experience difficulties, as pictures often turn out blurry, leaving the App unable to recognise content.

Designed For

The App was created for people active in the networking scene, those who often find themselves collecting business cards but rarely utilising them for future prospects.

We Rate It

We give it an 8/10 because although the App is a brilliant time saver and great for those ‘on-the-go’, its pros can once in a while be suppressed by its sensitivity to shakiness and lighting.
