One of the most historic hotels in Sweden's third-largest city, The Mayfair Hotel was a legend long before The Beatles came to stay at the height of their fame after being refused accommodation in one of the city's stuffier establishments.  A hotel that has won many awards, The Mayfair and its friendly service continues to welcome less conservative types to this day in its convenient location in the centre of the Old Town just off the main square behind the beautiful Renaissance-style City Hall.  The hotel may only be a hundred years old, but the building and the famous cellar with its vaulted ceiling goes back more than 700 years.

With a range of cosy single rooms, double rooms, and suites, Mayfair offers accommodation to suit any need.  This being Sweden, a big breakfast buffet is included and is served in the historic cellar, giving an atmospheric start to the day's activities.  The hotel also has a very hip restaurant/lounge at street level that sees a cross-section of Malmö society come and go throughout the evening.

From a tourism point of view, Malmö is an underrated city.  With so much attention lavished on Copenhagen and its culinary scene in recent years, Malmö has languished a bit even though it is only 45 minutes away by train across the engineering marvel that is the Oresund Link connecting Denmark and Sweden.  Malmö has some impressive restaurants of its own, many of them on or near the Lille Torg square which in summer is one big food and drinks festival.  Several museums, art galleries, and nice people complement the restaurants and the mellow summer light.  The Malmö City Card is a handy way to see the major sights with free or reduced admission.  The proceeds from sales of the Malmö City Card are put right back into the maintenance and support of the establishments participating in the Card program.

Just north of Malmö is Lund, home to one of Sweden's most esteemed universities.  Lund University's grounds are very beautiful and the town's small centre is full of notable buildings, including an impressive cathedral.

More information about Malmö is available on the tourism office's website:  www.malmotown.com/en.
